The Washington Aerospace Training & Research (WATR) Center, established in 2010, provides a direct pathway for those seeking an entry-level career in the aerospace industry or looking for opportunities to upskill. As part of Edmonds College, the WATR Center offers short-term, specialized certificate training programs designed to meet the needs of the advanced manufacturing industry. Since its founding 15 years ago, the WATR Center has graduated nearly 4,400 students, with over 90% of tracked graduates successfully securing positions in the industry.
The Center’s program focuses on five key areas of training and development including manufacturing assembly, electrical assembly, tooling mechanics, manufacturing composites, and quality assurance. These Specialty Certificates are tailored to the demands of industry partners, ensuring that graduates are prepared for the workforce. Beyond technical job training, the WATR Center also offers career support services like interview preparation and resume development and customization, ensuring students are well-equipped to enter the job market.
A unique feature of the WATR Center is the small class sizes. A maximum of 12 students per faculty member allows for personalized attention and a hands-on learning experience. The program is structured for flexibility to accommodate diverse schedules through a two-phase training model:
- Online 4-Week Manufacturing Core Certificate – A self-paced prerequisite where students learn the fundamentals of aerospace.
- 8-Week hybrid Specialty Certificate – Students choose a specialized track in electrical assembly, manufacturing assembly, tooling mechanic, manufacturing composites, or quality assurance. Students begin with a 3- to 4-week online overview and complete their journey with immersive hands-on labs, using state-of-the-art, industry-approved equipment. Students engage in a simulated workplace environment and have the opportunity to train on a donated Boeing 767 fuselage, gaining real-world experience.
The WATR Center is opening doors for students. The curriculum is career-defining and a certificate from the WATR Center can lead to long-term, good paying, and rewarding careers. You can start the path to building a career and in-demand skills at the WATR Center by attending a free tour every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m., visiting their website or emailing amsc@edmonds.edu.
