Curriculum Spotlight: Drilling

The Curriculum Spotlight series highlights a core instruction unit or skill set delivered through the Core Plus Aerospace curriculum. Our Spotlight on Drilling digs into why it’s important, what students will learn, and how the curriculum connects to Washington state learning standards.

Drilling, preparing holes for installation of fasteners or rivets, and safely handling proper tools and equipment are important skills in a variety of jobs within several industries, including aerospace manufacturing. The Core Plus Aerospace curriculum provides Washington students with hands-on opportunities to lock in those skills while they are in high school, giving them a leg up on any number of opportunities after graduation, such as pursuing a manufacturing job, apprenticeship, or college.

Here’s a preview of the new Curriculum Spotlight (link to PDF):

This curriculum grounds students in the fundamentals of using drills and associated tools to create quality holes in metal that meet industry standards, in preparation for installation of permanent fasteners. Lesson content highlights how to select and operate proper drilling tools and accessories safely, avoiding common defects to meet standards.
