The Core Plus Aerospace program at Olympic High School in Bremerton, WA, equips students with the skills they need to thrive in the advanced manufacturing industry by collaborating with local manufacturing businesses and education stakeholders.

“We work closely with Olympic College and local businesses, so we know directly how we can best meet the local hiring needs of the community,” said Richard Gifford, Core Plus Aerospace instructor at Olympic High School. “From The Boeing Company to our local naval shipyard, there are a ton of opportunities out there.”

Richard’s students learn foundational manufacturing skills, including precision measurement, print reading, and the use of basic hand and power tools. What his students enjoy most about Core Plus Aerospace is the opportunity to work with their hands.

“We worked a lot on riveting and working with metal plates and tools that are going to be useful in my career,” said Jonathan Arcivar, a Core Plus Aerospace student. “Taking Core Plus Aerospace is a really good path; it opened up a lot of opportunities.”

His students also learn about Lean manufacturing concepts, professional skills, and have experiences that will prepare them for success after graduation.

“I encourage students to take advantage of internships, skills competitions like SkillsUSA, and mock interviews that will prepare them for the real world after high school,” Richard said. “I really appreciate the efforts students put in throughout the year to prepare for their futures.”

Richard believes it’s important for students to start exploring manufacturing careers early. He is excited for the future of students in Washington state and the opportunity to learn advanced manufacturing skills that can lead to good-paying careers that can support them and their families.

“I love what I do because I get to see kids be successful,” Richard said. “I get to see kids apply what they’re learning in my classroom and take that into the outside world.”
